Thermal instability in differential transistor amplifiers

A form of thermal instability analogous to thermal runaway can occur in differential transistor amplifiers under certain conditions, whereby the two transistors pass unequal standing currents despite otherwise balanced circuits. A simple theoretical explanation based on an empirical formula is proposed which accounts for the effect, and an effective practical remedy is indicated.
