  • Abstract
    A study of the effects of substituting small amounts of manganese for iron in the terbium-dysprosium iron2 Laves-phase intermetallic system is presented. Pseudocrystalline (twinned single-crystal) rods of Mn-substituted Terfenol-D (TbxDy1-xFe2; x=0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6) were prepared by free-standing-zone methods such that the [111] crystalline directions were perpendicular to the rod axes and the [112-bar] crystalline directions were oriented along the rod axes. The magnetization and linear magnetostriction were examined as functions of temperature from zero to +90°C, compressive axial prestress from 5 to 36 MPa along the [112-bar] growth direction, and Tb-Dy ratio. From these measurements it was possible to determine the effect of Mn substitution on hysteresis, magnetic anisotropy, and saturation magnetostriction
