Abstract :
Though all existing strong-focusing electron storage rings have separated-function lattices, the combined-function lattice would reduce energy loss to synchrotron radiation. Robinson and Hofmann and Zotter have shown how to overcome the anti-damping that was once thought to rule out this possibility. Their formulation is generalized to achieve a more realistic machine design having FODO cells to incorporate the inevitable straight sections between magnets and to allow for any subsequent insertion of nonlinear elements. An analysis is performed to estimate the energy savings for a 50×50 GeV e+ e- facility using combined-function magnets.
