A multi-functional telephone with conversational responses and pause deletion recording

The authors describe a multifunction telephone that provides conversation-like responses (appropriate automatic responses to callers´ inquiries) and pause deletion recording. Conversation-like responses make it easier for callers to record their messages and pause deletion recording effectively expands the available recording time, overcoming the cost drawback of using semiconductor memory. It is thought these features will help callers overcome their unwillingness to speak to a machine. The voice response system used is described.
