Abstract
The conditions under which finite element representations of magnetostatic fields using magnetic scalar potentials suffer from cancellation errors are examined. It is shown that cancellation errors can arise from numerical roundoff at several points in the calculation, and that the magnetic field from a full scalar potential is not necessarily more accurate than the magnetic field from a reduced scalar potential. A method for controlling cancellation error in the source term for reduced scalar potentials is presented.
