Abstract :
The California Institute of Technology Physics/Engineering network (referred to as the "Caltech network" in this paper) is a software system which has been developed over the last four years for high-speed data acquisition, graphics, and distributed computer resource communications. This paper presents: (1) a brief history of past and current development of the network software; (2) features currently implemented; (3) current speed performance; and (4) applications of the network to research and education at Caltech and at other institutions.
