Abstract :
By using a high power erbium-ytterbium-doped fibre amplifier to amplify with pulses from a modelocked fibre laser compressed in a dispersion decreasing erbium-doped fibre amplifier (DD-EDFA), we have generated a 0.5 W average power train of 280 fs pulses at 1558 nm. The bandwidth is 10.6 nm, and the time-bandwidth product is 0.37. The maximum pulse energy of 53 pJ corresponds to 166 W of peak power. Spectral shaping effects in the amplifier can be used to improve the quality of pulses compressed in the DD-EDFA
