Self modulation at gigahertz frequencies of a diode laser coupled to an external cavity

An external cavity coupled to a continuously operating GaAs diode laser has been found to cause modulation of the light output at a frequency within the range of 0.6¿2.2GHz. The modulation depth is close to 100% and the linewidth is 200kHz.
