Abstract :
Guidelines that were adopted for the implementation of the highway traveller information system (HTIS) in the Jiangsu province of China are presented. Framework design is discussed including HTIS architecture and functional requirements. The HTIS architecture levels, of which there are seven, are illustrated and the major functions of each logical level are discussed. Analysis is made of three topology patterns (centralised topology, distributed topology and hybrid topology) of the HTIS, and the topology framework based on hybrid topology is presented accordingly. Furthermore, the layout framework of the Jiangsu province HTIS with consideration of the freeway network and normal highway network. This layout framework establishes the foundation for further development of the Jiangsu province HTIS
