  • Abstract
    Advanced simulations show that closed-form outage predictions for first-order polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) can be inaccurate in practical communication systems. We adapt the two-step method to obtain outage probabilities for arbitrary optical signals and receiver designs. The approach is free of restrictive assumptions and allows for direct experimental testing, required for accurate PMD outage specifications.
