Abstract :
Various aspects of the process of establishing telecommunication standards are discussed. Specific examples from recent cases in voice communications illustrate the standardization process and various strategies used to reach common agreement. The characteristics of successful standards are summarized. A list of several organizations involved in telecommunication standards is included.<>
