Abstract
Service history of medium-voltage power cables on US plant sites of a major industrial manufacturer from 1961 to 1990 is summarized. In past years, this company tended to be reactive, using specifications, diagnostic testing, and maintenance practices to manage the reliability of their cable distribution systems. Several new technologies in insulation systems, terminations, splices, and installation techniques introduced in recent years have allowed a more proactive stance to be taken. In addition, because of some specific failure problems, a highly qualified in-house team has been formed to evaluate existing and future technologies and new insulation materials to assure a reliable cable system
