Abstract :
The paper examines the use of self-excited induction machines as low-cost stand-alone generators, including the problem of guaranteeing excitation, should remanent magnetism be lost. The behaviour of the generator under balanced and unbalanced conditions is analysed and the results used to evaluate the static VAR sources available to control the machine excitation. Experimental results for two static VAR sources and a variety of operating schemes are presented
