Abstract :
Disconnecting switches (DS) and earthing switches (ES) in gas insulated substations (GIS) can be required to interrupt high currents, which are closed-loop currents for DS and electromagnetic induced current for ES.DS and ES must also have full dielectric strength, even after interrupting these high currents many times. An investigation of the interrupting capability of five types of extinction chambers has revealed that magnetic driving types are optimum for closed-loop current interruption and suction types are optimum for electromagnetic induced current interruption because of their simple construction and excellent performance
