Abstract
A design strategy is presented for a switched capacitor module for use in series-compensation schemes. The module offers improvements over existing schemes by utilizing thyristor-switched capacitors to allow fast, reliable and flexible series compensation. It is shown that offset voltages due to reinsertion can be eliminated in several ways, and proper damping prevents thyristor damage. The minimum energy rating required for the metal oxide varistor (MOV) is specified based on the switching capabilities of the thyristor pair
