  • Abstract
After defining responsibilities for station design, considerations of optimising the station layout are discussed. This covers site restraints, relationship with the adjacent `A¿¿ station and the need for extensive civil reclamation. The alternative turbine house arrangements of transverse against longitudinal turbine generators are examined, taking into account location of main and auxiliary plant, civil and superstructure and plant costs and construction and maintenance requirements. The paper next considers the optimisation of the mechanical auxiliary systems related to the turbine generator in general, and those for the CW system and boiler feed pump system in detail. The factors of performance, availability, reliability and capital and running costs are discussed, and the reasons for the final choice are given. The paper concludes by giving guidelines to future designers and a detailed programme of actions when ordering boiler feed pumps.
