Abstract
The sensitivity of a solid, disk-shaped, beta ray detector facing a gas-filled sampling volume has been determined using numerical integration. The calculation uses empirical expressions for electron straggling and the Fermi function. Models have been constructed for asymmetric, cylindrically symmetric and spherically symmetric sampling cavities. A typical sample cavity has been evaluated for beta ray spectra having end points ranging from .01 to 3.0 MeV. The calculation is found to be in good agreement with experimental data for 85Kr and 133Xe.
