Abstract :
An approximate efficiency analysis is carried out for a transferred-electron material with an arbitrary velocity/field characteristic. This shows that it is not only important to have a high peak/valley ratio if one requires a highly efficient material but also to have a material in which the velocity saturates after the valley. This then provides a basis for comparing different materials.
