Abstract :
The technical and economic effects of added phase noise in a satellite communication system are briefly discussed. Factors which affect the phase-noise performance of oscillators, simple signal sources and synthesisers are explained, yielding a simple graphical method of analysis which, when applied to an engineered SHF synthesiser, gives reasonable agreement with measured results.
