Moulded optical-fibre connectors using rods and balls

Abstract :
Moulded demountable single-fibre and compact multifibre connectors, which contain precision rods and balls within the plug mouldings to locate the fibres and to align pairs of plugs, have been constructed. The samples tested so far have exhibited insertion losses of less than 0.2 dB with index matching and off-axes of less than 3 ¿m on average.
