Abstract :
This paper describes the recent technological advances in managing the oscillatory stability of power systems to avoid potentially serious grid disturbances. While the tools for dynamic modeling of power systems have long been available and remain an essential part of tackling power system instabilities, it is not advisable to depend on model-based approaches exclusively. Emerging technologies that can be used to observe dynamics within networks have proven to be increasingly valuable for increasing power transfers and defending against blackouts.
