Abstract
The He/sup 3/ proportional counter is widely used for neutron detection in nuclear well-logging tools, where high levels of thermal and mechanical stress are routine. The capabilities of these devices are summarized, and the chief mechanisms related to stable operation in the logging-tool environment are examined to provide some practical guidance to tool designers and users. The discussion covers charge output, He/sup 3/ proportional counter spectra, thermal neutron sensitivity, gamma sensitivity, temperature effects, and spurious signals. The use of integral decoupling networks is briefly considered.<>
