Abstract
Using a simple formula, iron losses in oriented 3% silicon steel are predicted for nonsinusoidal flux density waveforms. The formula is based on the concept of frequency independent and dependent parts of the total loss and also includes anomalous loss. It is found that the accuracy of loss prediction depends upon the method of inserting values into this formula. If the values are based on experimental measurements from nonsinusoidal waveforms, then an accuracy of 2% is possible when the third harmonic content is 0 to 30% of the fundamental and the peak flux density is 1.4 to 1.8 T.
