Abstract
The author presents a historical overview of the communication satellite from the early 1950s with launch of Sputnik 1, through the 60s and 70s (including the LEO satellites, Echo, Courier and Telstar and the advent of the geostationary satellite) to the present day. He concludes that the now unquestioning acceptance of the technology has signalled that the communications satellite has come of age
