Abstract
The phenomenological theory of odd magneto-optical effects is considered, and the results of experimental measurements of the equatorial Kerr effect for various magnetic fluids are given. The authors demonstrate the potential of using these effects to study the magnetization of magnetic fluid and the absorption of fine ferromagnetic particles in a thin surface layer of magnetic fluid. For some fluids based on Fe3O4 particles, an unusual long-period change is revealed in the intensity of p-polarized light reflected from the magnetic fluid surface
