Abstract
An anomalous loss spike observed in the absorption spectrum beyond the cutoff wavelength of the fundamental mode of a straight depressed-cladding fibre can be attributed to supermode coupling caused by slight variations in fibre diameter occurring during the fabrication process. Bending of the fibre shifts this coupling to a higher wavelength.
