Abstract
Short single-mode fibre interconnections used for clock and data distribution in high speed computer systems are susceptible to modal noise which cannot always be eliminated by conventional methods of controlling fibre layout conditions. The modal noise power penalty in such links is evaluated, and bounds on laser modal partition factor and splice losses as a solution to the modal noise problems in such applications are recommended.
