Abstract
A description is given of the differences in uses of a superconducting solenoid coil and a nonsuperconducting (normal) solenoid coil in the optimization of a coil design. For the normal solenoid coil only the geometrical parameters must be taken into account; for the superconducting solenoid coil the effect of the magnetic field on the current-bearing capability of the superconductor also must be considered. The optimization methods used in each instance are presented and discussed. A practical example calculation illustrates that (1) the optimum superconducting-magnetic design is more economical than the nonsuperconducting design; and (2) once the initial design parameters are fixed and the critical characteristics of the superconductor given, then the optimum design for superconducting solenoid coil will be fixed completely and uniquely.
