Abstract :
After a brief biography of K.B. Birkeland, the author describes Birkeland´s electromagnetic gun project and provides details of the so-called Gala lecture at the University of Oslo on Feb. 6, 1903, when Birkeland officially demonstrated his gun. The future potential of Birkeland´s gun for mass transport and rocket launches is also examined
