Abstract :
A solenoid with a length of 290 mm and a free bore of 240 mm was built for testing model conductors. The multifilamentary cable has a graded Nb-Ti cross-section corresponding to the decreasing magnetic field from inside to outside of the winding. The coil is wound on a glass epoxy former and vacuum impregnated. During operation in the SULTAN Test facility at SIN, Villigen, the coil is forced flow cooled with supercritical helium through a cooling pipe on the surface, At a current of 660 A the coil creates a field of 7.2 T in the test volume.
