  • Abstract
    The Clarendon Laboratory has been a centre for high magnetic field research since 1945, when a 2MW d.c. motor-generator was installed. Resistive solenoids of up to 10T, a range of superconductive magnets of up to 16.5T and a hybrid magnet comprise the main facilities. In this paper the authors will describe recent developments to these centralised facilities, including: 1. The Oxford Hybrid Magnet. A description will be given of this installation together with plans to increase its maximum field to 20T. 2. Large, shared superconductive systems. The problems associated with operating such systems will be reviewed and a description given of the latest centralised facility, namely an 11T transverse access magnet. 3. Purpose-built small/medium superconductive systems Examples will be chosen to illustrate advances in constructional techniques. Reference will be made to the use of these systems as research tools in many areas of condensed matter physics.
