Abstract
It is reported that the performance of a high-power free-electron laser amplifier using a conventional linear permanent-magnet wiggler could be improved by modifying the wiggler to provide a focusing force to the electron beam in both the vertical and horizontal planes simultaneously. The authors discuss several wiggler configurations found using the three-dimensional finite-element method. The effects of the distribution of magnetization, the structure of the rectangular block, and the magnet height on the flux distribution were investigated.
