Abstract
It is proposed that the magnetic force density can be regarded as the principal single parameter for the characterization of magnetic separation devices. A classification of the various devices is presented and the design features as well as the processing capabilities of both conventional and superconducting large-scale HGMS machines is discussed. Future developments of HGMS are also considered.
