Abstract :
Magnetic components such as inductors and transformers constitute one of the major ingredients of a switching power processing system. This paper presents a detailed comparison and implementation of the magnetic component designs of two functionally similar switching power converters, i.e. the conventional Buck-Boost converter and the new topology Cuk converter, both of which are capable of either stepping up or stepping down the input voltage. A cost effective, computer-aided design approach using the nonlinear programming (NLP) technique is employed to design the magnetic components of these two converters such that the total weight of each converter is minimized respectively.
