Abstract :
The quadruple-clad fibres are intrinsically multimode structures because both the LP01 and LP02 modes propagate. From experiment and theory, the `cladding¿ part of the profile is seen to support the LP11 and possibly also the LP21 modes in the usual 1.2¿1.7 ¿m wavelength interval.
