Abstract
A brief examination is made of the long distance telephone industry and its evolution since the breakup of AT&T. The use of local access numbers by hackers who try to gain illegal access to long distance telephone systems is discussed. The methods used by one regional long distance carrier, South Tel of Florida to deal with the problem of illegal access are described.<>
