  • Abstract
    The authors show that externally-modulated coherent AM optical links are limited by the third-order nonlinearity of the electro-optical modulator (EOM) and the EOM nonlinearity reduces the dynamic range by 5-19 dB from the theoretical limit. When the received optical power is less than approximately 1 mW, these links have a better dynamic range than conventional direct detection links.
