Investigation of Problems Caused by Microorganisms in Cooling Towers

Cooling water systems, particularly cooling towers, provide a favorable environment for growth of microbial forms leading to deposition fouling and corrosion within the system. The growth of microorganisms can foul pipeline, increase pumping costs, reduce heat transfer, cause corrosion of metal and attach wood. In this paper, the presence of microbiologically problems in a cooling tower was investigated. The results indicated the presence of many microbial groups in water of cooling tower. The presence of sulphate reducing bacteria (SRB) were recognized by different tests. The microorganisms of water caused corrosion and scaling. The water treatment of cooling tower was ineffective and should be changed.
