اصل سادگي در آثار هيئت و نگاهي دوباره به انگيزه‌هاي ايجاد مدل‌هاي غيربطلميوسي

The Principle of Simplicity in the Hayʾa Books : A Revision to the Motivations behind the Development of non-Ptolemaic Planetary Models

قطب الدين شيرازي معتقد بود بطلميوس در مقدمۀ مجسطي گفته: هر هويتي را كه در نجوم نيازي به آن نباشد بايد حذف كرد. اين اصل با بعضي تعاريف مفهوم سادگي و صرفه‌جويي در فلسفۀ علم نزديكي دارد. عبارت «حذف آنچه به آن نياز نيست» در مجسطي نيامده. ظاهرا اسحاق يا ثابت آنرا درترجمۀ عربي آن افزوده اند. هيئت‌دانان جهان اسلام در ضمن بحثِ هيئت افلاك خورشيد بارها به اين اصل اشاره كرده اند و معتقد بودند كه براي خورشيد مدلي با افلاك كمتر قابل‌قبول‌ است، چون «ساده‌تر» است. اما مدل‌هاي غيربطلميوسي كه منجمان مراغه، از جمله شيرازي، در آثار هيئت خود عرضه كرده اند داراي افلاك بيشتري نسبت به مدل‌هاي بطلميوسي بودند. مدل‌هاي غيربطلميوسي به خاطر حل تناقضات مدل‌هاي بطلميوسي با اصل «حركت يكنواخت» افلاك در فلسفۀ طبيعي ارسطو مطرح شده بودند. با اينكه در فلسفۀ طبيعي ارسطو حداقل دو اصل ديگر نيز براي حركات افلاك وجود داشت كه با هيئت بطلميوس تعارض داشت، منجمان مكتب مراغه تعارض اين دو اصل را مهم نمي‌دانستند و اشكالي از اين جهت به مدل‌هاي بطلميوسي نمي‌گرفتند. شايد علت اين رفتار دوگانه اين بود كه فرض افلاك بيشتر با سرعت يكنواخت ساده‌تر يا ظريف‌تر از فرض افلاك كمتر با سرعت نايكنواخت حس مي‌شد.

Quṭb al-Dīn Shīrāzī in his Ikhtiyārāt Muẓaffarī in Hayʾa (theoretical astronomy), believed that according to Ptolemy in the introduction of Almagest, any entity that is not necessary for astronomy should be omitted. This principle seems close to the definition of the notion of simplicity and parsimony in philosophy of science. Although several times the “simplicity” is brought up and applied, the phrase “omitting what is not necessary” is not mentioned explicitly in the Almagest. It seems that Isḥāq ibn Ḥunayn or Thābit ibn Qurra added this phrase to the Arabic translation according to their own understanding of the content of the book. The Islamic astronomers mentioned “simplicity” within their discussion of the solar model again and again and believed that a model with fewer orbs is acceptable for the sun, because it is “simpler”. Nevertheless the Maragha astronomers’ non-Ptolemaic models include more orbs than the number of the orbs in the Ptolemaic models. The non-Ptolemaic models were produced to solve the contradiction between Ptolemaic models and the Aristotelian natural principle of uniform motion. Although there were at least two other Aristotelian natural principles for the celestial motions which were in contrast with Ptolemaic models, Maragha astronomers did not pay attention to these contradictions. It is possible that they felt that supposing more orbs with uniform motion is simpler or more elegant than fewer orbs with non-uniform motion.
