URINARY TRACT SONOGRAPHY & VCUG FINDINGS IN UNDER 10 YEARS OLD CHILDREN WITH ACUTE URINARY TRACT INFECTION

Urinary tract infection(UTI) represents the most commen genitourinary tract disease in children and are the second most commen infection in children. Studies in sweden that used the urine bag collection technique found UTI in 1.4% of asymptomatic neonates. In this study, 70 proven cases with UTI (58 females & 12males) under 10 years old children were selected and sonography of both kidneys & bladder (distended bladder & post voiding),then VCUG(21-52days after initial diagnosis)were done.The clinical , sonography and VCUG findings were collected and compared . The most commen age group was 8-10 years(22 cases -31.4%).UTI among females in all age groups was more commen than males. The most commen sonographic findings was normal ( negative), in 55 cases (78.6%) for renal sonography and 41 cases (58.6%) of bladder sonography. The hydronephrosis and thickened bladder wall located in others. The VCUG in 44 cases(62.9%), showed with no abnormal findings , in 26 cases (37.1) increased bladder wall thickening , and in 9 cases (12.9%) V.U.reflux was observed . The findings in this study, except VCUG, are compatible with reference data. in VCUG , V.U.reflux was markedly less than refrences (12.9% versus 29-50%). Therefore, complementary studies and comparison between VCUG & voiding radionuclide cystography necessery.
