Comparison of Tolerant and High Productive Barley Lines in Favorable and Unfavorable Environments

Due to climatic variations in drylands, selection shall be based on optimum responses of genotypes in different conditions. One hundred and fourty six-barley genotypes were sown at an optimum and late times that were considered as favorable and unfavorable environments, respectively. The research was conducted at Gachsaran Agricultural Research Station in 1998-99. Results showed that those six lines in low yielding and three lines in high yielding conditions had significant differences compared to check (var. Izeh). None of the genotypes had significant differences with check in both conditions. The ratio of average grain yield responses to selection of 10% high yielding lines than check in each environment, were nearly equal in two environmental conditions. Selection efficiency of genotypes for stress conditions was estimated 1.29 in non-stress conditions, and 1.6 when genotypes selected in stress conditions for favorable environment. Using principal component analysis based on grain yield of genotypes in different conditions, five susceptibility or tolerance indices, and with regard to different agronomic traits, 11 lines were selected for more evaluations at improved trials in the future.
