A Study of Intraspecific Karyotype Divergence in Aegilops triuncialis in Northwest Regions of Iran

In order to study intraspecific karyotype divergence in Ae. triuncialis, thirteen populations of this species collected from Northwest regions of Iran were studied using Squash Technique. Chromosome number in all populations was 2n=28, but karyological characters such as total length of chromosomes, chromosome arm ratio, number as well as length of satellites, karyotype formulae and symmetrical indexes showed high variations. Pearson Correlation Coefficient for chromosomesʹ absolute length among populations was significant at 1% level, but was highly reduced for long arm length, short arm length, as well as for long arm over short arm length ratio. Results indicate presence of high genetic variation among the populations in Ae. triuncialis species. This variation can be useful in breeding programs of polyploid wheats and to broaden the genetic variability of the gene pool.
