COMPARITIVE STUDY OF THE EFFICACY OF CEFTRIAXONE AGAINST STRAINS CAUSING NOSOCOMIAL AND COMMUNITY ACQUIRED URINARY TRACT INFECTION

Nosocomial infections have emerged as major causes of mortality and morbidity in hospitalized patients. Urinary Tract infection is one of the most common types of hospital - acquired infections. Cefriaxone as a third generation cephalosporin is frequently used for the treatment of these infections. The present study compared the MIC and MBC of ceftriaxone for treatment of bacterial strains isolated from nosocomial and community-acquired infections using macrodilution method. 82 strains isolated from urinary tract nosocomial infection and 73 strains isolated of non nosocomial urinary tract infection were compared in the present investigation over 7 months . The rate of MIC & MBC of ceftriaxone for bacterial strains isolated from nosocomial urinary tract infections with MIC (2-256(Mio)g/ml) & MBC (4-256 (Mio)g/ml) shows a singnificant increase (p<0.001) as compared to strains isolated from community - acquired infections with MIC (1-64 (Mio)g/ml) & MBC (2-64 (Mio)g/ml).
