    Background: Despite major diagn ostic and industri al progr esses in the technology and use of Ionizing radiations, they have been found to be harmful to the health o f the radiology and nucle ar medi cin e s taffs . Since Ionizing radiations have the potenti al to produce free radi cals. therefore, it is likely that the tot al plasma level of an ti-oxidant in med ical and nuclear medi cine sta ffs could be reduced. Methods: In this case-control study the relati onship of total anti oxidant level of plasma and the fun ction of immune ce lls such as lymphocyte proliferating response using MTT method , Neu trophil chemotaxi, Int ensi ty of respir atory burst (NBT) and evaluation o f IL-2 and IL-4 (EUSA) were invest igated, 101 samples were co llec ted for thi s study and they were assigned as two groups: 61 samples cases from radiol ogy and nucl ear medicine staffs of Tehra n Universi ty of Medi cal Scie nce hospitals (Sharia ty, Imam Khomeyni, Gha lb-e-Tehran) were assigned as the exposed group, whereas, 40 samples from Pediatric, Ortho pedic, Infirmary and Emerge ncie s ward s were ass igned as control group. Using heparinized syringes , 8 to 10 ml of blood samples were co llec ted from each person with age between 25 to 50, ave raging 36.4±7.2, and severa l assa ys including Anii Ox idan t Capac ity of Total Plasma (FRAP Meth od), T cell proli fera tive response to PHA mitoge n (MTT Method). Chernotaxi of neutrophils and Magnitude of respiratory burst were carried out on these samples . The result s were analyze d using spirman correla tion analysis. Results : The results showed that expos ure to ionizing radiation chronically with low dosed had no effect on chemotaxis of neutorophils and iutensity of respiratory burst , but could have effect on lymphocyte fun ction specia lly in cyto kines sec retion like IL-2 which are esse ut ial in the immune responses. Conclusion: This study indicates tha t long term low dose ionizin g radi ation may have effec t in some parts of the immune fun ction .
