Closure time of spheno-occipital suture in the female cadavers referred to Legal Medicine Organization of Iran

Background & Aim: The identity ofdead is an essential part ofpost-mortem examination. Estimation ofage is one of/he important factors that helps identification. The identification ofunknown human remnants begins with the creation (?lan anthropological prcfile, which includes sex, biological age, stature and individualizing features. The aim ofthis study was investigation the closure lime ofsynchondrosis to corroborate as an indicator ofbiological age especially in Iranian females. Material,ʹ! & Methods: This is a descriptive cross sectional study. Closure time among Iranian 8 10 26 years old females cadavers with direct inspection during autopsy was evaluated. Data were analyzed by SPSS 11.5 software. Findings: During 2006-7,50 cases studied. Closed position l ..ʹusfound in 10% ofcases, while 90% ofcases had opened were situation. Semi closed situation wasn ʹf seen in any cases .Mean age ofopen and closed were 8.8 (+/J. 30). J9.66 (+/-3.7), respevtivotv The range otage ;ʹ1 open situation was (8-JI) years old. All ofcases with complete fusion (dosed) were 13 years or above. Conclusion: Our results showed that closure ofspheno occipital suture can be used as a good indicator for age estimation in females. Females ....-ith estimated age ql8-26 years with complete fusion (closed) and nofusion, should be in age 0/(7.5-14.1) and (13.24-26) rears old respectively (with 95% (onfidence interval). Other parameters like radiography, epiphysis situation and dentis must be evaluated (0 improve the accuracy.
