Dynamic Encyclopedia: an Opportunity for Using Collective Wisdom in Encyclopedia Writing

This article, after reviewing the history of encyclopedia-writing around the world, examines the factors which led to the emergence of third generation encyclopedias known as dynamic encyclopedias. It then mentions the changes occurred in this field and points out the importance of collective knowledge in compiling encyclopedias. The next section of the paper discusses the quality of the information found in Wikipedia as a dynamic encyclopedia. Finally, the article studies the limitations of such encyclopedias and the solutions to overcome these limitations.
