The Surface Ruptures of the 2005 November 27 Qeshm Island Earthquake

A unique example of co-seismic surface ruptures in the Simply Folded zone of the Zagros mountains, SE Iran was documented. Field observations indicate that the Mw 6 November 27,2005 Qeshm Island earthquake was associated with ~ 5 km of north- facing surface ruptures trending NE-SW with a maximum vertical displacement of ~ 3 cm. The field observations are consistent with the reported focal mechanism of this earthquake showing a reverse faulting with a small right-lateral strike slip component on a fault trending 240-260°. However, another co-seismic surface rupture developed along a fault trending NNW wi th a maximum right-lateral strike slip displacement of ~ 1.5 cm, which seems to have been associated wi th the second event of smaller magnitude. This earthquake is likely to be triggered along a right-lateral strike-slip fault trending 300° by the first event
