The internal recurrences in Europe over a period of several centuries
led to the creation of large empires whose military power relied mainly on
their navy, and whose survival depended on their dominance over many
of the worldʹs regions. The Great Britain was one such power, which for
centuries dominated over regions such as India and its natural resources,
huge market, and cheap labor supply. Securing India through the Persian
Gulf was of utmost importance to Britain. From the point of view of Lord
Curzon, one of the architects of British foreign policy at the time, the
Persian Gulf was consequential for two reasons: it was a key region for
the preservation of India, and it was an important marine route that
needed to be secured. In this paper, the colonizing methods used by
Britain in the region, the role of Lord Curzon, the architect and the
th fh
executing character of the British presence in the late 19 and early 20 century, the reasons for the downfall of the Qajar dynasty, and the consequences of the presence of foreign powers in the Persian Gulf are analyzed.
