Anatomic and morphometric study of oviduct in ostrich (Struthio camelus)

In this evaluation anatomic and morphometric aspects of oviducts of 12 adult and immature ostrich were subjected to study. Results indicated that Oviduct of ostrich made up of regions including Infundibulum, Magnum, Isthmus, Uterus and Vagina. Length average of adult ostrich oviduct in non-production season with 118.67±4.71cm and production season with 135.4±3.90cm is approximately equal to the length of oviduct of South American Rhea with average of 122±23.21cm; Althogh the length of oviduct of ostrich is shorter compare to its body mass. Diameter of different areas of oviduct in ostrich than other birds depends to the size egg. Mucosal longitudinal folds are similar to these chicken and Rhea. Height and width of these folds are greater as compare to other birds. Because of this reason determining their pathway and number in ostrich are easier. Translucent region and vaginal sigmoid area in ostrich are similar to those of poultry. Mucosal color difference in various parts of ostrichʹs oviduct, particularly at the time of eggs production, is markedly visible.
