Study of Radical Scavenging and Anti Oxidant Effects of Essential Oils of Stachys Inflata.

This research identi tied the compounds in the essential oils of the stem andleaf of Stachys inflata plant by making use of GC-MS. The study isolated23 compounds from the essenti al oil of the stem and 30 compounds fromthe essenti al oil of the leaf out of which 3-methyl-2-thiophenecarbo xamid washigh est in quantity. Additionally the capacity of free radical scavenging and antioxidantprop erties of essential oils were considered. The DPPH test (I, l-diphenyl2-picrylhydrazyl) was used to determine the extent of free radical scavengingprop ertie s. The result of the test indicated 32% and 44% free radical scavengingprop ertie s for the essential oils of the stem and the leaf, respectively, in comparisonwith Trolox, a synthetic free radical scavenger (51%). The ~-carot en e-linoleic acidmethod was adopted to determine the anti-oxidant properties which resulted in22% and 28% for the essential oils of the stem and the leaf respectively
